Ornon, the ruler of the powerful kingdom of Shadzea, fathered twenty sons. In order to find the one son worthy of inheriting the throne, nineteen of them had to die... Though the life of the Twenty is rigid, Dulok manages to meet secretly with his mother every week. Ornon’s twentieth son has no desire to be the Survivor, the future ruler of Shadzea. As soon as they find a way, Dulok and his mother, a humble kitchen servant named Daynea, will flee the City of Kings for a simpler life. But on a fateful night, as they make their plans, the door to Daynea’s quarters bursts open. There stands Ornon with Buz, his first son—Dulok’s hated half brother, who has discovered Dulok’s “indiscretion.” With two soldiers restraining him, with Buz laughing cruelly, Dulok watches in horror as Ornon drives a sword into Daynea’s heart. That night, Dulok’s destiny becomes clear. He will survive the dangerous Princes’ Trials at all cost, so that he might stand on the Day of the Reckoning. Then, and only then, he will destroy Ornon and Buz, and the life of the gentle Daynea will be avenged.

This was the first story by Mike Sirota that I've read. Overall, I'd rate it an interesting read. The characters were fleshed out some, the plot was intersting and not overly cliche, and the writing was solid.

But it isn't an classic. I found many of the characters a bit underdeveloped, and in a couple of cases couldn't really see the motiviation for the character. There was a bit too much reliance on some rather common fantasy standards.

The conflicts also ended up rather understated. Instead of open fighting beteween the main character and his rivals, the story is centered on a burning need for revenge that the main character has, but he wants it to play out a specific way. The lack of open conflict diminishes the impact of the conflict. It's there, but it never drew me in.

Still, it is a fun story, and far batter than some of the other stories I've struggled through. I recommend this to thsoe who love mideval style fantasy worlds.

The Sons of Ornon Mike Sirota 9780984007264 Books Reviews

Happily, I received this item as a gift. It was from the author--one of a pair of books. The "gifty-ness" of it does not affect my review one iota. As a professional eBook producer, I don't get to leave reviews very often, so I'm happy when I can, and when it's a good one. (n.b. I had no part in the production of the book and have no interest, direct or indirect, in its success or that of its author).

The Sons of Ornon is, as my review is titled, a perfectly enjoyable summer read; it thoroughly explores the Hero's Journey, from the youthful protagonist to the mentor to the love interest. If you are a fan of Sword & Sorcery, it's likely you'll enjoy this story.

The tale commences with "The Rite of Twenty," a grueling ordeal for many young boys and their mothers. I won't spoil the book by revealing what this is; but in some ways, the first chapter is tough to get through, because parts of it feel brutal. The brutality, however, is the key to the story, and eventually serves as the underlying theme and catalyst(s) for the protagonist, Dulok, and his sibling, Buz--although each in his very own way.

The author launches into the backstory early in the first chapter, and more thoroughly in the second, with a deft hand--thank heavens for a writer whose touch is light enough that you never encounter the dreaded "info dump!" The Scullery maid who becomes Dulok's mother; the obsessively-loved Concubine who gives birth to Buz...and so a fateful rivalry begins between two boys. Each has unspeakable tests to pass in order to be considered for the highest position in the land; each must endure horrific assessments and scrutiny. Nearly two decades will pass before the ordeals are over.

The story has it all questing, sidekicks (faithful and otherwise), stallions (of course!), magical gems, beautiful women, conniving women, devious men, honor, betrayal and skullduggery. No Hero's Journey would be complete without these elements, and Sirota handles them well. To me, even more importantly, he managed to slide two "reveals" past me--two mysteries and surprises that I never saw coming. I absolutely relished these; and when I checked, yes, he'd given me a clue here and there, cleverly enough so that I missed them--so it wasn't a "cheat" or a Deus Ex Machina.

A quick, engaging read that fulfills all you could ask from this theme; I recommend it confidently to anyone who loves this genre.
I have been reading a lot of fantasy books lately, and found this one and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you for the hours of entertainment provided without having to watch TV.
If you enjoy sword and sorcery novels with mystifying, beautiful women and enigmas and twists thrown in to the mix, then you'll love this one. Watch out, Mike Sirota's novels are fast and furious and can become as addictive as your morning coffee.

Highly recommended.
The synopsis of the 'Sons of Ornon' hinted at a pretty good read but after reading the first 5 chapters, I found that it began to get boring and somewhat numerically repetitive. The story I suppose was not too bad but on the overall, I found that it was a countdown from twenty to one and not an awful lot more. I had guessed the final outcome which wasn't really a spoiler for me and the action was okay but it just didn't compel me to read page after page to find out who was going to inherit the throne. It would mostly suit the YA audience in my opinion as I felt it wasn't engrossing enough to captivate my attention. EK
